What are insulinomas?
Insulinomas are a rare tumor type that affect cells in the pancreas, which secrete insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps regulate blood sugar (glucose) after a meal by allowing it to move from the bloodstream into muscles, fat, and the liver, where it is used or stored.
A healthy pancreas secretes the right amount of insulin to keep blood sugar levels stable. But in a pancreas with insulinomas, the tumor cells produce excess insulin, causing too much glucose to be taken from the blood and blood sugar levels to drop. This leads to frequent episodes of low blood sugar called hypoglycemia. Even small insulinomas can lead to hypoglycemia.
Most insulinomas are benign, which means they are not cancerous. Approximately 10% of cases are malignant.

Symptoms
People with insulinomas may experience:
- Symptoms that are brain-related, which show that the brain isn’t getting enough glucose. These include confusion, visual disturbances, seizures, or coma
- Symptoms caused by the body responding to low blood sugar, like sweating, tremors, or palpitations
Did you know? Repeated episodes of hypoglycemia may also make it harder to recognize warning signs of low blood sugar, a condition known as hypoglycemia unawareness.
"It happened a couple of times over a few months. I’d be out walking the dog, and I’d suddenly faint and I had never fainted before. I didn’t realize at the time what it was. Then about a month later, it happened again. I hadn’t eaten anything that morning, and that’s when things really started to make sense.”
